As West Indian’s living in NYC we find that our culture and heritage becomes extinct as we get wrapped into different lifestyle and cultures. Enhancing our East Indian cultures, heritage and foods has been a battle in the survival of our traditional values. For years Mr. Hitlall has been very active in promoting Eastern Indian culture in our community. His endevours began with the promoting of amateur singers whom today are acknowledged worldwide. Cricket is a large part of the West Indian heritage and to introduce this sport to the youths really introduces them to their culture. His sponsoring events of this caliber bring together a day for families to enjoy in safety and harmony. His first cricket event occurred in September 2005 a game which involved Berbice vs Demara cricket teams. Among the crowd were some prominent politicians as well as the President of Guyana Bharrat Jagdeo. He also sponsored a culinary competition(DUCK CURRY) to the community, which again displayed a traditional West Indian food . This year Mr. Romeo Hitlall did something remarkable for the entire community. He sponsored the first Cancer Awareness Walk to raise funds/donations to help those stricken with the illness. While doing some research in the community I was surprised that there is quite a large percentage that were either diagnosed or knew someone with Cancer. It is a fact that many of them are at times afraid of seeking medical assistance because they think home remedies are effective or because they may not have medical insurance. The event provided free literature and assistance to everyone as well as united the local businesses in the area. As a community leader Mr. Hitlall goes beyond his civic duties and reaches out to our future “THE YOUTHS” of tomorrow.
